| PHOTOGRAPHY and me |
|
 |
Stills photography has always been my passion. I first took up photography around the age of twelve, inspired by my father who at the time was running a local newspaper. Some XX years later, I still get the same buzz from the magic of photography...
Now that the excited anticipation during the film's development has been replaced by the immediate gratification of the digital image, I have found a new degree of enjoyment from photography and am now spending time to develop this side of my work.

Having lived in Asia since 2002 I have found increasing opportunity to explore the world of photography, particularly through my involvement as filmmaker for the China Exploration & Research Society... though frustratingly I often find myself looking through the viewfinder of my video camera wishing I could take photos instead... But of course the reverse would also be true!
I guess its a happy dilemma to have...
|
Below I give you a little more info on my thoughts about photography, split into 5 sections. There is obvious overlap, for example: where does "landscape" finish and "nature" start? I don't know... I'll leave that one with you!
Some photos are hard to classify. You could say that in some way, all these photos are documentary - because they document my life, my interests and my travels...
As well as my abilities :o) |

I
don't envy anyone who goes for a walk with me because the
chances are they'll become extremely frustrated by my constant
stopping and starting whilst taking photos.
Some landscapes demand black and white, others scream out colour! In the UK, I often felt b+w best suited the muted colours of the landscape (I've always considered the UK as a "grey" country!)
B+w is wonderful at bringing out the real beauty between changes of tone - where ciaroscuro is king! |
| However, when I first visited Asia, I realised that b+w did not do it justice! There's nothing like putting a good trannie on a light box and seeing the colours leap out at you! (that sounds dated!) |

I particularly like contrasts: between the urban landscape and nature; hard and soft lines; or old versus new. I think that nature has an important part to play in the urban landscape (which is why I like Singapore so much).

We need to be grounded, we need reminding of our place in nature and our reliance on nature for our survival.
We
cannot afford to lose touch with nature. |

When
studying photography, my greatest heros were the war photographers
of the 20th century. In particular W.
Eugene Smith. You cannot help but be emotionally affected
by his pictures. He managed to show such humanity in the
most inhumane situations. There were (and still are) many
others, too many to mention... but I will just pay respect
to one more - Nick
Ut, who created one of the most memorable images of the Vietnam war, and is still shooting today.
The
messages of their images are timeless, and I would urge
everyone to explore the work of these great men. |

Photography is a very personal pursuit to me, particularly when you are pointing a lens right at someone's face.
Whether taking stills or moving images, I am always very conscious of the "lens effect" - how pointing a camera at someone can immediately affect their behaviour, provoking contrasting reactions - imediately a complete stranger can become your best friend or worst enemy.
But regardless of the response, you're bound to get a good picture!

So, where does "landscape" stop and "nature" begin? ... Well, I guess to me, landscape is the wide open expanses, and nature photos are the closer, more detailed shots...
Nature
and landscape photography has always been my favourite -
a welcome chance to escape! Brecon (Wales, UK) in March
is exhilarating! One minute it's sunny, then dramatic clouds
role in and snow starts to fall, you walk a mile further
and the sun is out again, its warmth wrapping itself round
your wind-chilled cheeks like you were being hugged by Mother
Nature herself! The UK at its very best!!!

I have recently added corporate photography to my list - it particularly makes sense when combined with shooting video as by combining these two disciplines I can save clients money :o)
I particularly enjoy the big industrial jobs - which Singapore has more than its fair share of thanks to the ever-busy docks.
I'm also required to shoot timelapse on occasion too (see right) - which is easily done with my Canon 7D and/or 5D. This job was for CombiDock. |
| Above & below - Shoot for Acergy/SubSea 7 - The Seven Borealis, with the world's largest heavy load mast crane being erected. An amazing feet of engineering. |
